About the artwork
The artwork entitled Spine draws inspiration from the ancient civilizations of the world, just as the spine is one of the central parts of humans that give us shape and carry us, it is also a metaphor in this case to the birth of ancient civilizations and therefore the birth of what has become modern society.
"An imaginary civilization, maybe not an imaginary one, but the civilization of the new man. Civilization of today's people. The spine as an essence that carries it. A spine that has changed, transformed, sometimes broken, sometimes re-knitted with the effects of the new age. Transfer of historical information and a magnificent conversation. He is there to tell his history to Antiochus, to share it, to take advice from the past, in the holy land where history begins to be written at sunrise. What do the new people developing in the field of technology and science tell the kings? What does he listen to from them? On the terrace, where history begins with sunrise and conversation ends with sunset, the essence of man, civilizations and modern people are evaluated together."
The work Spine was originally shown atop Mount Nemrut in 2023 as part of the Kommagene Biennial in Turkey. Mount Nemrut is one of the highest peaks in the east of the Taurus Mountains in southeastern Turkey. At the summit are a large number of statues erected on what is a royal tomb from the 1st century BC. The site is also deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“All knowledge corresponds to experience. Regardless of its nature, experience is a flow in time, a continuity, a living event that shines in eternity. I base my work on the similarities between organic data and digital data.“

Ecem Dilan Köse is a conceptual contemporary artist, born in Ankara, Turkey in 1990, with deeply ingrained roots in the architectural discipline and generative art. She produces by using digital tools in the context of concept method relationships. In her effort to make sense of the world and the universe; Köse created an artistic approach that encapsulates the interplay of similarities between organic textures and digital data. Her holistic style breaks down artificial distinctions in information processing as she carefully interweaves digital and natural data to process it as a whole. She heralds a new world of knowledge where the rigid fragmentations of duality fade as humans reach out to their inner core and unveil the long-omitted code of unity, arguing that the future can be compatible with human nature with the integration of technology and organic materials.
As an artist that defies artistic classification's narrow boundaries, she has been expressing her creative energy in many fields, digital art installations, AI, VR, sculptures, and conventional artwork, and audiovisual performances. Köse's artworks have been exhibited in many countries and she has participated in many festivals with digital sound integrated. She at times presents her works to the audience by performing them live. The artist, who continues to work in Istanbul, believes technology changes human behaviour for the better and is a tool to become better individuals and a better society, that technology raises a human beings level of awareness.

About
It's a particularly important and relevant piece, because it talks about the birth of civilization in a very progressive way. By using digital art as the means of storytelling, Ecem creates a unique dichotomy in art. With Spine, it's not the future pushing the future. It's the past pushing the future. An artist who positions her work closely to her existential search in life, asking the most relevant questions of being of this day and age, and her embrace of the latest tools of technology puts her at the forefront of digital art and art/history.
