About the artwork

The Fig Tree is a profound reflection on life’s choices and unchosen paths. A central figure, a woman curled into a fetal position, represents vulnerability and potential. From her body grows a fig tree, with each fig symbolizing a different life path—some ripe with possibility, others fallen and lost.

Interwoven into the tree’s trunk is a snake, a dual symbol of healing and destruction. This motif bridges Lana’s Beninese and Jewish heritage, where the snake represents wisdom, divination, and transformation.

This artwork invites collectors to contemplate the passage of time and the beauty of decisions that shape identity.

Women are effortlessly art, that's why I paint them. They radiate love, and love is what I paint.

Lana Denina

1997

Lana doesn’t just create art—she builds worlds. Her canvases are mirrors, not for the literal, but for the emotional and existential.

Based in Montreal and born at the crossroads of Beninese and French cultures, Lana carries the weight and wonder of dual heritage with a grace that’s anything but quiet. She paints as if to insist that complexity is not something to fear but something to celebrate—a refusal to simplify what it means to be human, feminine, or seen.

Lana has exhibited her work at prestigious events like Art Basel and the Venice Biennale and is a pioneer in Web3, having released a groundbreaking NFT collection. Her art challenges the fetishization of women of color, celebrating their beauty and resilience with bold surrealism and vibrant colors.
